About the seminar: High-resolution simulation with coupled models is becoming a new norm for both climate studies and operations. In this talk we introduce recent activities on incorporation of a new model grid hierarchy for ocean and sea ice modeling in the Community Earth System Model. The grid resolution covers the range of climate simulations (0.45-deg) to sub-mesoscale modeling of the ocean (0.03-deg). In the Arctic, we carry out simulations based on grids with 21-km, 7.3-km and 2.4-km grid resolutions. By CESM D-type simulation cases, we force the sea ice component with normal-year atmospheric forcings and couple it to Slab Ocean Model. This enables consistency in modeled sea ice climatology and direct comparison across the resolutions. We show that the model simulates reasonable multi-fractal properties of sea ice kinematics, and we further we evaluate the effective resolution of lower-resolution simulation with high-resolution counterparts. One key finding on EVP subcycling is that the convergence of EVP rheology not only affect the sea ice kinematic features, but also cause systematically thinner land-fast ice. This work highlights the importance of sea ice kinematics modeling which may be overlooked, especially in climate oriented and high-resolution studies.
