INTRODUCTION
Physical Oceanography Laboratory (POL) was founded in 1987 with the support of $1.1 million's loan from the World Bank and the equivalent domestic constructive funds. In 1989, the laboratory was approved as the Open Research Laboratory by the State Education Commission. In 1989, it was first promoted to be the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education of China.
The laboratory has 110 staffs currently, including 1 Academicians of CAS,6 awarded National Outstanding Youth Foundation Scholars, 4 Wanren Plan Leading Talents in Science and Technology Innovation, 2 Changjiang Scholar, 15 Taishan scholars.
Relying on the state key discipline-physical oceanography, the provincial key discipline -marine meteorology and the base for Talents Cultivation of Marine Science, POL sets doctoral programs such as physical oceanography, meteorology, atmospheric physics and environment. The post-doctoral stations for marine and atmospheric science are also established.
POL obsesses a batch of advanced outdoor and indoor observation instruments: the large wind-wave-current tank, the internal wave tank, the SGI super computer, the mainframes, etc. The integrated scientific investigation ship 'Dongfanghong II' of OUC (Ocean University of China) provides the primary service to the laboratory's research.
POL is doing the basic research on marine science mainly in the following 3 divisions: Ocean Circulation Dynamics, Ocean Wave and Mixing, Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction and Climate. The research here is mostly supported by the grants from NSFC, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) and the MOE. Presently, the laboratory is carrying out bunches of significant national research programs such as 2 Major Research Plans from the MOST, 4 National Basic Research Programs(Project 973),1 Innovation Research Group program from the NSFC, 1 joint project of NSFC and Marine Science Research Centre of Shandong Provincial Government, and more than 10 subjects of National High Technology Research and Development Program(Project 863) . The major national R&D project on scientific equipment has been granted 82 million RMB by NSFC in 2015, and it’s is the first state-level project for equipment R&D in marine sciences.
POL is open to the public by setting the visiting fellowship program, the indoor technical and experimental work on marine science is also served.
