On the morning of April 17th, the academic lecture on Biotechnology: Enabling Understanding of the Unknown World was successfully held in the Chinese-style lecture hall of Haide College. The event featured four distinguished experts in the field of biology: Zhang Youming, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology of Shandong University; Xu Jian, Director of the Key Laboratory of Energy Biotechnology and Genetic Resources of Shandong Province; Wang Hailong, Associate Director of the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology of Shandong University; and Zheng Daoqiong, Assistant to the Dean of the School of Marine Sciences of Zhejiang University. The activity was hosted by Chi Zhe, the mentor of Class 2 of Haide, with the participation of student representatives from Haide and the College of Marine Sciences.

Zhang began by sharing his experiences studying in Germany, leading into the development of genetic manipulation technology and the application of Red/ET recombination engineering. He encouraged students to actively broaden international horizons and continually enhance research capabilities.

From the perspective of principles to instruments,Xu introduced the single-cell technology targeting metabolic functions in microbial communities. He expanded students' academic perspectives by presenting the Raman spectrum instrument for single-cell metabolic detection.

Professor Xu introduced the current status of China's precision scientific instrument industry.

Wang showcased the prospects and challenges of developing new microbial drugs through the introduction of microbial gene editing and synthetic biology for drug synthesis, effectively igniting the academic enthusiasm of the students.

Zheng focused on teaching yeast genomics, creating a strong resonance among students by introducing the development and utilization of yeast, an excellent model organism that can function in the kitchen and win the Nobel Prize.

During the event, students actively engaged with the guest speakers, presenting their academic inquiries and challenges, leading to a positive interaction.

The aim of this event was to enhance the academic literacy of Haide students, stimulate research interests, and cultivate academic research capabilities. The in-depth and innovative academic presentations by the four guest speakers provided valuable insights for the participating students, deepening their understanding of the field of life sciences and laying a foundation for their future academic research pursuits.
