二、讲座信息
Individual difference (ID) factors refer to traits, dispositions, and characteristics, be they biological, social, or psychological, that make learners unique individuals, cause variation among learners, and are hypothesized to have a direct and/or indirect impact on learning outcomes (Li et al., 2022). Because of its importance in explaining learning mechanisms and predicting learning outcomes, ID variables have been subjected to extensive empirical research. However, there has been a lack of theoretical guidance for ID research, and the methods of the research have yet to be systematically scrutinized. In this talk, I will provide a thorough, critical synthesis of ID research including theoretical perspectives, major streams of research, and ways findings of ID research may inform the practice of second language teaching and learning. I argue that the objective of ID research is construct validation, namely, to collect evidence for the theoretical claims about the nomological network where ID variables interact with each other and with learning conditions, making unique and joint contributions to second language development. I will conclude the talk by identifying current trends, limitations, and new directions.
