报告题目:Evaluation of OTEC Resources with an Ocean General Circulation Model
Abstract:
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a renewable energy technology. It utilizes the temperature difference (温差) between the warm (surface) and cold (deep) seawater to convert some of the solar radiation (太阳辐射) stored as sensible heat (显热) in the surface layer of tropical oceans to electric power. In this presentation, I will give a brief overview of past and present activities related to this technology, provide an evaluation of the energy resources that OTEC may provide and discuss the environmental effects that might occur based on studies with an ocean general circulation model.

主讲人简介:
Yanli Jia graduated from Shandong College of Oceanography (now known as Ocean University of China) in 1983 with a B.Sc in Meteorology. She received her Ph.D in oceanography in 1989 from University of Southampton, United Kingdom. In 2000, after a brief postdoctoral fellowship at University of Southampton, she joined the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences as an ocean modeler at the Southampton Oceanography Center (now the National Oceanography Center at Southampton). Since 2004, she has been with the International Pacific Research Center at the University of Hawaii, first as a visiting researcher, then as an ocean modeling specialist. Using ocean circulation models as tools, she has studied ocean processes such as eddy dynamics, mixing, ventilation and overflows. Most recently, she has explored the effects of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), a renewable energy technology, on the global ocean circulation.
