In particular, the role of propagating waves in modifying the mean flow through radiation stress has been studied extensively. However, the theory is still sketchy for waves with large amplitudes -- the very limit in which their interaction with the mean flow becomes significant. In this talk pro. Nakamura will outline a new diagnostic framework for quantifying the amount of mean flow adjustment by finite-amplitude Rossby waves and the role of mixing associated with wave breaking in modifying the mean flow.
